Personal Experiences
Bertha was born and raised in Kansas City, MO., where her family was continuously involved in social justice and civic engagement efforts. So it is not surprising that Bertha walked her first picket line at age 4 – protesting the unacceptable conditions of her overcrowded segregated kindergarten! Since then, Bertha has been the recipient of numerous awards for her efforts – most recently the Columbia University Teachers College Roundtable Social Justice Action Award and the American Psychological Division 45 (Society for the Study of Culture, Ethnicity & Race) Research Conference Lifetime Achievement Award for Diversity Services and Policy. Bertha has a longstanding love for travel that was sparked by her high school experience as a foreign exchange student in Denmark. Her other hobbies include cooking, gardening, collecting African and African American art, reading, writing, and jazz. Her life experiences have led her to be a fair, thoughtful, effective activist and advocate for all in the Bloomingdale neighborhood.
